Holiday – The Book of New York

Title: Holiday – The Book of New York

Edited by Ted Patrick, with photos credited to many photographers, and texts from E.B. White, Langston Hughes among others.

Published by The Curtis Publishing Company in 1949

Folio: 88 pages, photographically illustrated covers, softcover with spirals, no dust jacket

This is a special edition from Holiday magazine, offering a vast array of photos and texts on New York. Many of the texts are from notorious writers, including E.B. White’s famous piece “Here is New York” published for the first time in this special edition of Holiday, before becoming a book on its own. There are also two famous poems from Langston Hughes about Harlem, “Ballad of the Landlord” and “College Formal”. This is an expanded version of an earlier issue focusing on Manhattan. Even though the photographic work is not attributable to famous photographers of that time, the pictures, black and white and color, offer a nice mid-century illustration style.
