Ken Ohara – One

Author: Ken Ohara

Title: One

Text by Hiro

Published in 1970, by Tsukiji Publishing Co. Tokyo [A new edition was published by Taschen in 1997]

4to: 500 pp; Paperback with photographically illustrated dust jacket

A compilation of 500 portraits, all tightly framed, suggesting almost a scientific approach, denying any spontaneity from the photographer or the subject. Nevertheless, the tones in these black and white pictures are such that it is difficult to differentiate ethnic and racial groups. This could indeed evoke an idealistic view of New York, and to some extend the whole humanity, as one human species, rather than insisting on differentienting them.
